As you scan the health food isles you may come across strange foods and powders that are often hard to pronounce. You know they are good for you but without knowing its benefits you may not be motivated to try them. Adding super foods to your diet can be life changing. You can prevent disease, lose weight, and feel more energetic by adding these foods to your diet. Here is a list of not so common superfoods that pack a mega nutrient punch. Acai berries contain higher levels of antioxidants than pomegrantes and blueberries. Some of the benefits include boosting brain function, improving cholesterol, and preventing cancer. Look for them in the frozen fruit section and put them in your smoothies. Maca is a peruvian plant grown in the Andes mountains and is related to cruciferous vegetables like broccoli. It has many benefits, but a few to note, is that it improves mood, reduces blood pressure, and improves learning and memory. Maca root can be found in powder form and added to meals and smoothies. Cacao powder is packed with flavonoids, the same phytonutrients found in fruits and vegetables. These nutrients reduce high blood pressure, improve brain function, and protect against cancer. In addition, it increases insulin sensitivity, and improves symptoms of type 2 diabetes. You can add cacao powder to your smoothie but my favorite way to eat it is by making avocado chocolate mousse. It acts as an anti-inflammatory and is high in fiber. You can add this powder to your breakfast bowls, and smoothies. Microgreens are tiny little vegetables that pack a powerful nutritional punch. Some are nine times higher in nutrients than the regular size version. Microgreens prevent disease, help manage weight, and boost mental and physical well being. Sprinkle them over main meals or add them to your salad for an extra nutrient boost. Kelp is one of the most popular types of seaweeds in health stores. It contains as much protein as beef and is high in fiber. Kelp is one of the best natural sources of iodine which is needed for thyroid hormone production. It can also raise energy levels and boost immune function. Try adding kelp to miso soup or add it to your vegetable juice. Hemp seeds are rich in healthy fats including omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Some benefits include: reducing cholesterol and blood pressure, improving digestion and reducing eczema.
