I come from a family where food is king, and desserts are a part of every meal. Growing up, many of the people in my family were overweight. Because of this, I did not develop good eating habits as a child. I did play sports in high school and stayed somewhat active. However, as I got older, I found myself gaining weight and by the time I was 31, I weighed about 230 lbs. This is about 40 to 50 lbs. above where I should have been. I found myself slipping into patterns that were letting me gain weight. When I was 31, I decided to change the way I did things. I did not want to be another type II diabetes casualty. I began controlling my portions at meals and choosing better options by eliminating many of the sugars in
my diet. I also began an aggressive running program. Through hard work, I was able to lose about 40lbs and get down to about 190lbs. I was able to keep the weight off for a while. In 2008, my wife and I adopted two children. This changed my life considerably. As all parents know, keeping a regular exercise program is difficult when you are raising children. It is also hard to stay on a healthy diet. Slowly, I started letting myself slip back into bad habits on eating. Although I was able to maintain a running program, my diet was rather poor, so I was always battling my weight.
In the summer of 2014, I was introduced to Beyond Barriers Personal Training. One work out with Tricia, and I knew that this was completely different from any type of workout I had done before. I thought I was in decent shape because of all my running, but Tricia quickly identified many weaknesses that I had. I left the first few workouts totally exhausted from all the different exercises. I knew from those first workouts, that this was the type of training that I needed. Tricia was able to help me identify my poor eating habits and challenged me to get them back under control. When Beyond Barriers opened the new location on Churton Street, I joined some of the new group classes. These regular classes have proved to be great for me. The classes are just the right size and are always challenging me to push myself harder. For the last three years I have enjoyed these classes and have been able to maintain my weight along with improving my strength and endurance. Because of Beyond Barriers, I have been able to push myself to run two 10-mile races and a half marathon race. I could not have done it without the consistently challenging workouts. Today I feel stronger and more complete physically than I did when I was 31. This is thanks to the great team at Beyond Barriers.
